BNZ Crusaders take first home game of 2020 to Nelson

Earlier kick-off times and ‘Kids Go Free’ memberships introduced to improve fan experience

The BNZ Crusaders will open their 2020 Investec Super Rugby campaign at Trafalgar Park in Nelson, the club has announced today. SANZAAR has confirmed next year’s draw, which will feature two regional games for the Crusaders and a ‘Kids Go Free’ membership offer, as the 2019 Champions look to secure their fourth consecutive title in 2020.

Ashburton will host the opening pre-season game between the Crusaders and the Hurricanes on Saturday 18 January before the Crusaders kick off their campaign on Saturday 1 February against the Waratahs, in a match that will see the club return to Nelson for the first time since 2015.

“The opportunity to play at the Ashburton A&P Showgrounds for our pre-season game is an exciting prospect for our club,” BNZ Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge said.

“We played on the West Coast as part of the 2018 pre-season, and Southbridge Rugby Club last year, so getting out to our regional fans is a great way for our players and coaches to connect ahead of the season.

“We are also thrilled to announce Trafalgar Park as our host venue for the Waratahs match. Our club enjoys plenty of great support from the top of the South Island and, with a number of Crusaders players coming from the Tasman region, this is a fantastic opportunity to take a Super Rugby game to one of our provincial unions. The fixture also falls on Nelson Anniversary weekend, providing local rugby fans with an opportunity to enjoy some great footy over their long weekend.”

Tasman Rugby CEO Tony Lewis added: "Tasman region love when our franchise comes to town. We are excited about the match and especially the large number of Mako players in the Crusaders team.

"The weekend will be a great festival occasion similar to the 2018 test match," Mr Lewis said.

Kick-off times will also be moved forward 30 minutes in 2020, with 7:35pm kick-offs now scheduled at 7.05pm in New Zealand, and 5:15pm kick-offs now at 4:45pm. This gives families more opportunities to attend Crusaders home games, particularly given the season starts earlier in February during the warmer months.

In line with earlier kick-off times, a new membership option has been added in 2020 to benefit families, which will see kids go free with a paying adult as part of the Hellers Take A Kid To Footy membership offer, including covered seats and a carpark pass. The Crusaders Club Membership will go on sale on Monday 23 September via crusaders.co.nz

The 2020 Investec Super Rugby draw was released by SANZAAR today, and will see the Crusaders host eight regular season home games, including the Trafalgar Park match and a repeat of the 2019 Final against the Jaguares. The side will also travel to Tokyo for the first time to take on the Sunwolves. Click here to view all fixtures.

Tickets for both the Ashburton and Nelson games will go on sale from Monday 4 November via Ticket Rocket.
