Read is recognised as one of the classiest players in world rugby. He began his senior representative career as a blindside flanker but has now evolved as the starting No 8 for both the BNZ Crusaders and All Blacks.
Kieran first stood in as captain for the Crusaders while Richie McCaw was injured during their nomadic 2011 Investec Super Rugby campaign and during McCaw's 2012 extended leave. He became the regular captain of the team in 2013, but focused on All Blacks captaincy in 2017, with Sam Whitelock now taking the helm at the BNZ Crusaders.
Read represented New Zealand at Secondary Schools, Under 19, Under 21 and Junior All Blacks Level. He also captained Canterbury to their 2008 Air New Zealand Cup win.
His talents have been recognised with Kel Tremain New Zealand Player of the Year award in 2010 and the IRB World Player of the Year in 2013.
