Born in Melbourne but playing for Tasman, Samu captured the attention of BNZ Crusaders selectors and earned himself a contract in 2016.
He was voted the Crusaders Knights (development team) Player of the Year in 2015 and ended up being called into the Crusaders squad as injury cover late in the season.
He played club rugby for Randwick in Sydney and was briefly in the Waratahs Wider Training Group. He also spent two seasons in England with the St Ives club in Cornwall before returning to Randwick then making the move to New Zealand.
His brother, Lua Vailoaloa, played 20 games for Tasman as a halfback in 2007 and 2008.
