Rising Star Cooper Roberts Commits to Crusaders Until 2028

The Crusaders are delighted to announce the signing of Cooper Roberts, a talented mid-fielder from Blenheim, who’s signed on through the 2027 and 2028 Super Rugby seasons.

Roberts will join the 2026 Crusaders Wider Training Group, a key step in his journey into the Super Rugby environment.

A proud Marlborough Boys’ College graduate, Roberts has been part of the Crusaders Academy since 2023. He’s grown through the Crusaders pathway, sharpening his game and earning a spot in the Tasman Mako development squad for the 2024 Bunnings NPC.

He made his debut in Round 8 of the 2024 NPC, starting on the wing against Otago in Dunedin. By the end of the 2025 season, he'd racked up 9 appearances – including 5 starts – crossing for 7 tries and collecting 15 points.

Standing at 1.88 m and weighing in at 97 kg, his combination of power, pace and aerial skill has quickly earned him a reputation as a serious threat.

His rise continued in 2025 with selection for the New Zealand Under 20 squad. He featured in 7 matches across the U20 Championship and Rugby Championship, added a try to his name and gained valuable experience on the international stage.

Roberts is a natural centre with the ability to cover wing. He’s known for his line-breaking ability, defensive grit, and relentless work-rate. His agility and balance between attack and defence make him a perfect fit for the Crusaders’ evolving backline.

Crusaders Head Coach Rob Penney says Roberts’ signing is a win for the region and a testament to the Academy system.

"Cooper is a quality product of the Crusaders region and our pathway, coming through the Academy, excelling at NPC and NZ U20 level. His athleticism, vision, and versatility mean he fits perfectly into our plans.

“We're excited to bring him into our Wider Training Group in 2026 and see him develop into a top-class Super Rugby player in 2027 and beyond."

Roberts says signing with his home franchise is a dream come true.

"Growing up in Marlborough, the Crusaders were always my benchmark. To be part of the Academy and now signing for 2027–28 is a huge honour. I’m eager to learn from the senior players, push myself in training, and earn my way onto the field. I’m ready to work hard and represent the Crusaders with pride."

The full 2026 Crusaders Wider Training Group will be announced on Friday 7 November.
