Crusaders Hall of Fame Inductee #7 - Mark Hammett
The Crusaders have inducted three more legends into the Crusaders Hall of Fame this afternoon at the third annual charity lunch.
In 2023, the inaugural Hall of Fame event was held, where Todd Blackadder, Justin Marshall, and Wayne Smith were inducted.
2024 saw Norm Maxwell, Leon MacDonald and Reuben Thorne join them.
This year, three others were set to join the esteemed club of Crusaders greats: either a capped Crusaders player who has retired from playing rugby at least 5 years prior from recognition, or a Head Coach who has finished coaching the Crusaders.
To be considered for the illustrious Hall of Fame, potential inductees must meet specific criteria.
The first inductee of the 2025 event was Crusader #18, Mark Hammett.
Christchurch born and bred, Hammett saw the first professional era of rugby in 1996 and was a member of the first Crusaders Super 12 side.
A regular starter, he went on to play 81 times for the red and black.
The solid hooker won Super 12 titles from 1998-2000 with the Crusaders and also enjoyed considerable success with the Canterbury provincial team.
Inducted today by Crusader #35 Steve Lancaster; Hammett said there was a flood of tears, as well as a flood of memories of his time in the jersey when he found out he was getting inducted.
“It feels like Christmas receiving this award,” says Hammett.
“It’s a huge understatement to say how humbled I am to be recognised by this organisation and from the bottom of my heart, I thank the Crusaders.”
For the very first time, the whole Crusaders current squad attended the event this year.
“To the 2025 Crusaders – thanks for being here, thanks for the way you welcome us into Rugby Park as alumni – it’s not forgotten and we’re always right behind you.
“There’s a quote I think sums up this place, and it’s: “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care. The care in this place is genuine and authentic,” says Hammett.
