The third and final person inducted into the Crusaders Hall of Fame this afternoon was Crusader #58 Greg Somerville.

A cornerstone of the Crusaders in his time, Somerville exemplified the qualities of a Crusader – hard work, integrity, humility and he had immense pride in the jersey.

He had over 280 first class games in his career, 115 for the Crusaders between 1999 and 2008.

In his time in the red and black, he won six titles and scored nine tries.

He was inducted by Crusader #59 Dave Hewett in front of his friends, family, former teammates and coaches.

“Being inducted into the Hall of Fame and to be individually recognised amongst many other magnificent people - players, coaches and management - I must admit feels a bit awkward. To be singled out amongst so many other incredible individuals is hugely humbling,” Somerville shared after getting inducted.

He says a Crusader is someone who goes above and beyond, not only on the field but off it too.

“When I arrived at the club, what I felt quickly was inclusiveness, even the most seasoned players went out of their way to help others. I admired the guys I played with; I was inspired by their ability and courage.

“Today isn’t just about me, but the guys I played alongside, every time I come back here it’s so special. In a way to conclude and capture the meaning of the Crusaders for me: he tangata he tangata he tangata, it is people, it is people, it is people.

“By being inducted into the Hall of Fame, my hope of being a good teammate, I think I may have achieved.”
