Reuben Thorne was been inducted into the Crusaders Hall of Fame, adding yet another accolade to a tremendous career for the veteran campaigner.
Thorne debuted for the Crusaders in May 1997 against the Reds, and got his first start in February 1998 against the Chiefs. He went on to play 129 games for the Crusaders making him one of the most capped players of all time.
“The Crusaders have been a big part of my life, and to be recognised amongst this group and amongst this organisation is very special and a huge honour for me,” Thorne said.
A highlight for Thorne and fans alike would surely be 2002 – his debut season as Crusaders captain, succeeding fellow inductee Todd Blackadder. The team completed a perfect season that year, 13 wins from 13 games. The team finished 10th in 2001 after winning three titles in a row (’98-’00).
He was part of seven Super Rugby title wins, four as captain (’02, ’05, ’06, ’08). He captained the All Blacks in 2002 and 2003 and made 50 appearances for the national team.
Those early Crusader days were crucial in creating the culture we know how so well, and the systems and processes that have created enduring success for the franchise.
“I often reflect on where it started and the people who were there at the beginning for me. The people of my era were there at the start, and it’s laid the foundation for what we have today,” Thorne said.
“I always look back and think about the people involved, what they taught us, and how we grew that culture that we know today. That was always something I will always be proud to be a part of.”
