Giving the youngest Crusader fans a game day experience like no other
Crusaders rugby games are known for their exciting atmosphere, nail-biting action, and a strong sense of community. But one of the most unique features of home games is the opportunity for young fans to actively participate in the game day experience.
Our first home game of the season was no exception, and thanks to our incredible partners, we gave kids the chance to experience the game like never before.
At each home game, one lucky child is selected from the Golden Homes Family Members to run onto the pitch, carrying the ball kickers tee for all conversions and penalty kicks – fulfilling their dream of walking onto the field where their heroes play.
Ellie Apps enjoyed the spotlight after she was selected for the Golden Homes Tee Kid experience for round one.
The More FM Ball Runner gives kids a front-row seat to the live action in a truly unique way. A child is selected to run the ball onto the field with the captain through on-air promotions during the week leading up to the game.
Being a ball runner isn’t about being quick on your feet – it’s an opportunity for kids to feel like part of the team. They’re surrounded by the energy and excitement of the game and many young ball runners feel like they’re part of something much bigger than just a game – they’re contributing to the team’s success in a small, yet significant way.
7-year-old Henry Davis ran onto the field with Captain David Havili in front of a 13,000 strong crowd.
“The whole Crusaders crew were so great with Henry. He had such an amazing time and is still on cloud nine!” says Henry’s dad Miles.
During halftime, the Terra CAT Half-Time Ball Drop added another thrilling experience for 7-year-old Kenneth Hawkins.
Each home game, one lucky child member is selected to drive a Terra CAT car onto the field that often gets the crowd cheering in excitement, adding a fun twist to the halftime break. It’s a moment where they can hold the spotlight, feel the support of the crowd, and experience the excitement of being directly involved in a Crusaders game.
Kenneth’s parents Michael and Amarzaya said it was a magical experience for him.
“Kenneth had almost lost his voice from cheering for his team by the end of the game. When we got home, he talked excitedly of all the details right up to the minute he fell asleep. I do believe having such a wonderful entry to the Crusaders family has guaranteed that he'll bleed red and black for the rest of his life!”
These initiatives – Golden Homes Tee Kid, More FM Ball Runner, and Terra CAT Half-Time Ball Drop – are more than just fun activities. They’re about creating lasting memories for young fans, giving them an opportunity to connect with their favourite team in an unforgettable way. The Crusaders understand that the future of rugby lies in the hands of today’s youth, and by involving kids directly in the game day experience, they’re cultivating a sense of passion and pride in the sport.
For families attending games together, these activities also offer a chance for kids to experience the thrill of rugby while making memories with their loved ones. The excitement of seeing their child involved in such a pivotal part of the game adds another layer to the family experience.
