He is my legs, she is my inspiration: Jason and Alicia take on the Long Run together
The Long Run is all about community, courage, and standing alongside those who need it most. Today, thousands of people are hitting the track to raise funds for the Child Cancer Foundation – giving Kiwi kids and their families the support they deserve during life’s toughest battles.
For Jason Kapa, this event is more than just a run. Eight years ago, Jason weighed 187kg. His daughter Alicia, who lives with cerebral palsy, became the reason he turned his life around.
“There are days I don’t feel like running, but then I think about Alicia. There are times she doesn’t want to sit in her chair, yet she has no choice, and that’s what inspires me to push through and get out there,” says Jason.
Running quickly became a regular activity in their life, and is now something they look forward to doing together – whether it’s a run around the block or entering marathon events. Together, they live by a simple but powerful motto: He is my legs, she is my inspiration - a fitting motto for today’s event.
“This is such an amazing cause, and we just wanted to be in the corner of all these families,” says Jason.
“We want these kids to know we’re here to support them in their challenges and battles and give them every opportunity to enjoy this life.”

For Jason, nothing beats sharing these moments with Alicia.
“I love running and running with Alicia, and nothing warms your heart more than seeing families out here just having an event where they can walk and have fun,” he says.
“It’s not about how far or how fast – it’s about the cause we’re supporting. And how cool is it to have the Crusaders out here enjoying it with you? It’s a beautiful day.”
You can help Jason and Alicia make an even bigger impact.
We’d love to have you join us at Malvern Park today, but if you can’t be here in person, you can still take part through the Aotea Virtual Challenge.
From 23 to 25 January, participants around the world can complete their own kilometres in a 48 hour window. Every kilometre logged contributes toward our 60,000 lap target and helps raise vital funds for the Child Cancer Foundation.
