MATCH REPORT: Crusaders hold nerve in tense finish to overcome Chiefs in Christchurch

On Kids’ Round at One New Zealand Stadium, the Crusaders held their composure in a gripping final quarter to overcome the Chiefs 36–32, striking twice late before withstanding a frantic finish to secure a hardfought Super Rugby Pacific victory.

The Chiefs made the early running and opened the scoring inside five minutes when Kyren Taumoefolau finished in the corner, the conversion was missed but the Chiefs had asserted their dominance early.

The Crusaders responded with intent and thought they had struck back soon after when Noah Hotham broke clear down the left from a short lineout, only for the TMO to rule his boot had brushed the touchline in the buildup.

Sustained pressure and improved discipline swung momentum the home side’s way, and Leicester Fainga’anuku forced his way through contact on the goal line to level the scores, although Rivez Reihana was unable to add the extras.

The Chiefs leaned on their set piece to regain control. From a strong attacking lineout, Josh Lord secured possession as the maul rolled towards the line before Samisoni Taukei’aho peeled off to score, with Jacomb converting to push the visitors seven clear.

The Crusaders hit back through width and patience, Jamie Hannah collecting a bouncing pass to score in the corner, but again the conversion went astray.

Chiefs pressure followed, and after a series of closerange carries, Lord picked and grounded on the line, Jacomb converting to extend the lead.

Late Crusaders pressure ensured the margin was trimmed before the break. After repeated surges close to the line, Hotham found Christian LioWillie on a short pass and the No.8 crashed over, with Reihana converting to leave the Chiefs holding a narrow 19–17 lead at halftime.

The armwrestle continued after the break, with the Chiefs gaining momentum early in the final quarter and threatening to pull clear as they hammered away on the Crusaders’ goal line. The defence held firm under extended pressure, but a sideentry penalty allowed Jacomb to add another three points and stretch the margin to five.

Needing a composed response, the Crusaders struck in the 51st minute when Sevu Reece broke down the right edge and delivered a pinpoint pass infield for Johnny McNicholl to finish, with Taha Kemara converting to push the Crusaders ahead by 2 points.

The Chiefs responded swiftly through Quinn Tupaea from a sharp lineout movement, Jacomb converting before adding a further penalty to edge them back in front 29-24 as the tension built.

With time slipping away, McNicholl crossed for his second try in the 71st minute, finishing in the corner from a floated pass by Will Jordan to keep the contest alive.

A momentumturning 50/22 from David Havili then put the Crusaders back on attack, and moments later the captain delivered the decisive moment, slicing through to score from a late offload by Fainga’anuku.

Kemara landed the conversion to put the Crusaders four clear, but the drama was far from over. A late penalty chance went begging and the Chiefs launched one final attacking sequence, swinging the ball wide as they searched for a winner.

The Crusaders scrambled, forced the turnover at the breakdown and Fainga’anuku booted the ball into touch to seal a tense 36–32 win.

The night was topped off with celebrating Crusader #310, Liam Jack as he made his debut off the bench.

Head coach Rob Penney said the composure shown under pressure was pleasing.

“It was a really satisfying win. There were some really top performances tonight,” Penney says.

“After two minutes we knew the Chiefs were here to play and they showed it, but the composure across our group was fantastic. The young blokes when they came on didn’t get too rattled and they did really well.

“Getting over the bye week and playing like that against a side like the Chiefs was really pleasing. And we have a soldout stadium next week again against the Hurricanes.”
