Men’s Mental Health Match: Because some things are far more important than rugby

This Friday, May 29, when we take on the Hurricanes, rugby gives us a reason to come together. But this match stands for something far bigger than the scoreboard.
This is our Men’s Mental Health Match.
At first glance, the numbers we talk about in rugby feel familiar. Percentages, increases, one-minute moments. They’re part of how we measure performance, momentum and success on the field.
But some numbers tell a very different story.
50%.
That’s not a set piece target.
It’s the number of New Zealanders who will experience poor wellbeing or mental health in their lifetime.
121.7%.
This is far greater than the number of scrums we win per game.
But the reality is, psychological distress among Kiwi men has risen by this amount over the past decade.
60%.
This reflects the increased capacity of our new stadium.
It also represents the number of men who say pressure to “tough it out” has negatively shaped their experience of getting help.
One minute.
In rugby, it can change a match.
But somewhere in the world, it’s how often a man is lost to suicide.
Behind every statistic is a person, their family and friends. Someone’s partner, someone’s father, someone’s brother, someone’s mate.
That’s why this match matters.

The Crusaders and Hurricanes come together for this round because we know rugby has reach, and with that comes responsibility.
We also know that men are less likely to seek help when they’re struggling. Too often, silence feels easier than speaking up.
But every time one person talks, it makes it easier for the next.
Men’s Mental Health Match is about using our platform to start conversations that might otherwise feel hard. It’s about reminding people that checking in on a mate can be simple, powerful and life-changing.
A message, a call, a quiet moment to ask, “Are you okay?” and really mean it.
Because while rugby is what brings us together, it’s not the most important thing. Your mental health is.
On Friday night, we’ll fill One New Zealand Stadium with noise, colour and passion, as we always do. But above all else, we’ll stand together for something that lasts far longer than 80 minutes.
Because some things are far more important than rugby.
