Oli Mathis Signs Long-Term Deal with Crusaders Through 2028
The Crusaders are proud to announce the signing of one of New Zealand rugby’s most exciting young talents, Oli Mathis, for the 2027 and 2028 Super Rugby seasons.
Before then, Mathis will link up with the Crusaders Wider Training Group in 2026, giving him a chance to get familiar with the environment, build connections, and prepare for the step up to a full-time contract.
At just 20, Mathis has already carved out a name for himself. Hailing from Waihi, he attended Hamilton Boys’ High School, captained the New Zealand Schools team in 2023, and took home the prestigious Jerry Collins Bronze Boot award.
He was also part of the 2025 New Zealand U20’s team, runners up at the 2025 U20’s World Cup. His leadership and ability to perform under pressure marked him as a standout prospect early in his career.
In 2024, Mathis made his NPC debut for Waikato, showing off his versatility as a loose forward who can also cover the wing. Across seven appearances – five of them starts – he crossed the line five times, including a crucial semi-final try. His performances earned him the Men’s Young Player of the Year award at the 2024 NZ Rugby Players Association Awards.
On the international stage, Mathis made his All Blacks Sevens debut during the 2024 SVNS Series, scoring his first try in Dubai. His ability to adapt to the fast-paced, high-skill format of sevens rugby speaks volumes about his work ethic and raw talent.
Crusaders Head Coach Rob Penney says the signing reflects the team’s commitment to developing future stars.
"Oli is a player with huge potential and a great attitude. He’s already shown he can perform at a high level, and we’re excited to bring him into our environment to provide him an opportunity to take the next steps in his career.
“Having him in the wider training group in 2026, will enable familiarity with the environment to enable him to establish himself as he heads into the future with the Crusaders”.
Mathis says he’s excited to get started in the red and black.
"I got a taste of the Crusaders environment and culture this year, and i'm really looking forward to being there full time in the wider training group for next season and leading into 2027 and 2028."
"To be able to take the opportunity to learn off some exciting & established talent - Lio-Willie & Blackadder just to name a couple, is what is motivating me"
The full 2026 Crusaders Wider Training Group will be announced on Friday 7 November.
