Squad Bolstered for Southern Derby
The Crusaders have named their team to face the Highlanders in Dunedin this weekend – the first time we play our South Island compatriots this season.
It’s Round 12 of Super Rugby Pacific 2024 and with just four games to go in the regular season, we’re looking to close out the final weeks with wins to secure a top eight spot.
In huge news for players and fans alike, Tamaiti Williams and Codie Taylor return to the starting XV at tighthead prop and hooker. Tamaiti injured his hamstring in Round 1 making a break down the right flank against the Chiefs in Hamilton, while Codie’s been on a non-playing sabbatical for the duration of the season so far.
“Fabulous,” Rob Penney said on Wednesday.
“They’re both great Crusaders and quality players and people. They add huge value when they’re around and will add bounce and buoyancy which is great for us at the moment.”
They’re joined by Fletcher Newell at loosehead for an all-All Blacks front row. George Bell, George Bower and Owen Franks are ready and waiting on the bench to take up duties, all who have pulled on a Black Jersey at some point – including Franks who has more than 100 caps for the All Blacks.
Scott Barrett came off early against the Reds last week with a pulled muscle in his back. He’s recovered well this week, was training with the team on Tuesday, and Penney confirmed the captain will start at lock.
Quin Strange joins Scooter at lock, with Cullen Grace, Corey Kellow and Christian Lio-Willie rounding out the forward pack.
Jamie Hannah will run onto the paddock when needed at lock cover, while Tom Christie will make a huge impact off the bench when called upon. He maintains some of the highest competition stats for tackles won.
Noah Hotham has earnt another start at halfback while David Havili once again dons the starting 10 jersey. Mitch Drummond and Rivez Reihana sit on the pine ready to swing into action at halfback and first five.
Sevu Reece looks to add to this 100 first-class tries this weekend from the left wing, while Chay Fihaki returns to the starting pack on the right wing. Expect him to also be first-choice kicker when duty calls. Macca Springer has the 23 jersey in his locker this week.
Dallas McLeod and Levi Aumua once again occupy the midfield, continuing to find fluidity in their movements and combinations. Johnny McNicholl will pull on the 15 jersey, seeking to control things from fullback.
“Irrelevant of where teams are on the table, the Southern Derby is a massive occasion for both sides,” Penney said.
“It’s a long and deeply held tradition this game and it’s something we’ll do justice to.”
The boys travel to Canberra for Round 13 before back-to-back home games in Christchurch - first against the Blues on Saturday 25 May, then Moana Pasifika on Friday 31 May.
