QUALIFYING FINAL TEAM NAMING: Sold-out stage set for finals showdown vs Blues

It’s qualifying final time in Christchurch, and a sold-out One New Zealand Stadium will set the scene for another chapter in one of Super Rugby’s fiercest rivalries, with the Crusaders hosting the Blues for a place in the semi-finals.

Tickets were snapped up in just 20 minutes, marking a fifth consecutive sell-out at the new stadium and showing the appetite for finals footy.

Head Coach Rob Penney says the weight of the finals series has already been felt within the group.

“There’s a little more edge around, a little lifted intensity, and that will build as we head into the back part of the week,” Penney says.

The Crusaders have been forced into a reshuffle in the front row this week, with Fletcher Newell and Seb Calder both ruled out through injury. George Bower shifts from loosehead to tighthead prop, adding experience and versatility to a forward pack that will need to stand up in a physical contest.

There’s also the potential for a special moment off the bench, with Gus Brown named among the reserves and in line for a possible debut.

“Gus has been in the organisation for a couple of years now and developing away in the background,” Penney says.

“He’s been on the cusp of earning his chance, and now we’ve got an opportunity to give him an opportunity on a big occasion.”

Brown says the call-up came quickly after injuries created an opening.

“I had a bit of an idea after the game. After a couple of injuries I got told to stay ready. Then Sunday night I got the call that I was potentially making my debut this weekend.

“I’m super excited. I called the parents and they’ll be coming down, so hopefully I get the chance to run out there.”

The young prop has leaned on the experience around him, crediting the wider forward group for keeping him grounded.

“I’ve been in all year and over all the information, so now it’s just trusting myself. The boys around me and the whole front row crew have been awesome so far this week."

Penney says the Crusaders will need to be sharp across the full 80 minutes after identifying areas to improve from last week.

“We felt we got a bit carried away at times, and that won’t be good enough this week. We need to finish better and complete when we’ve got opportunities.”

Despite recent results, Penney expects a strong response from the Blues.

“They’re a quality side and they’ll be hurting. If you give them an inch, they’ll take it, so we’ll have to be right on.”

Elsewhere in the side, Taha Kemara returns to start at first five, while Braydon Ennor and Tahlor Cahill are back from injury and named among the reserves, adding valuable depth heading into finals.

With experienced leaders across the park and a home crowd behind us, we'll look to make the most of a fifth consecutive sell out in a match where every moment will matter.
