STAT CHAT: Crusaders v Blues - where defence shapes everything

Some rivalries just feel different, and whenever we square up with the Blues, we know the margins will be small, the collisions will be heavy, and the team that holds their nerve in the trenches usually walks away with the moment.
Across all of last season, these two sides built their year on defence, and the numbers tell the story.
The Blues were the second‑best defensive outfit in the competition, conceding just 23.1 points per game. We weren’t far behind, sitting third at 24.1.
The Blues gave up fewer tries than anyone else, averaging only 2.8 a match, and we were next in line at 3.4.

Both teams had an 89% tackle‑success rate, showing both of our defensive games are not ones to take lightly.
Where we held an edge was in the fight for the ball. Last season we finished second in turnovers won, averaging 8.1 a game. The Blues, by contrast, were last with 6.4 per game.
And with both teams preferring to kick more and pass less than anyone else, territory becomes gold. Field position becomes pressure and pressure becomes points. It’s the kind of game where one contestable kick can swing everything.
But if you want a reminder of how this rivalry looks when it lands at Eden Park, think back to the last meeting there.
Hoskins Sotutu carried like a man possessed: 17 carries, 71 metres and four defenders beaten. For us, Chay Fihaki lit up the edges with two tries and five beaten defenders.

Dalton Papali’i was everywhere, finishing with 15 tackles from 16 attempts. Cullen Grace was equally relentless, matching him with 15 tackles while pinching three turnovers that kept us in the contest deep into the night. His work rate and fierce firepower will be missed come Saturday night.
But if we’re talking about relentless loose forwards, we only have to look at both starting Number 8’s to see we have an intense attacking battle on our hands. Both Hoskins Sotutu and Christian Lio-Willie set the tone last season as ball carrying leaders for their teams.
They both played over 1000 minutes and averaged more than 40 carry meters per game.

If you’re heading to Eden Park or watching from home, settle in. It won’t always be pretty, but it’ll be a fierce contest that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.
Because when the Crusaders and Blues meet, it’s always guaranteed there will be a lift in intensity, and the stakes rise a little higher. After all, we have been rivals for 30 years, and that isn’t about to change.
Kick-off is 7.05pm Saturday March 7.
