Straight from Sacred Heart College first XV in Auckland, Chay joined the Crusaders Academy in 2019 and was part of the NZ U20’s in the same year.

Chay debuted for the Canterbury provincial team in 2020, picking up the First Player of the Year award and reaching his 50th game for them in 2024. He debuted for Crusaders in 2021 and in 2024 he was selected to play for the Barbarian side against Fiji in June, and the All Blacks XV in November.
