Johnny McNicholl extends through to 2026

Johnny McNicholl has extended his contract with the Crusaders and Canterbury through to 2026, shoring up the backline for the next two seasons.

McNicholl returned to his home turf in 2024 after a considerable stint overseas, namely at the Scarlets in Wales where he scored 53 tries in 130 appearances. He also earnt 10 caps for the Welsh national team after his debut in 2020 versus France.

The 33-year-old Cashmere High School alum, Crusader #165, and Sydenham Rugby Club stalwart said he was pleased to recommit to the Crusaders. Despite the team’s disappointing result in 2024, McNicholl had a standout season.

“I’m very pleased to sign with the Crusaders through to 2026,” McNicholl said.

“I always knew coming back and playing in front of family would be a great experience, and I’ve loved my time being back in the Crusaders environment.

“Our home fans are some of the best and most loyal around, so playing for them has been fantastic.”

Rob Penney, Crusaders Head Coach, said McNicholl had been a “fantastic asset” to the team during the 2025 season.

“Having Johnny back in the mix has been great both on and off the field. He’s a great man and a top-notch footballer,” Penney said.

“I’m sure I’m joined by all our members and fans in being thrilled to have him wearing the colours for another two years.”
