Match Report: Round Four v The Hurricanes

The Crusaders were home for Round 4 and the crowd turned out to support the boys for the first time in Christchurch this season. It wasn’t the result we wanted, the Hurricanes coming away with the win 14-10, but the occasion was epic.

Our boys had the lead going into the final minutes on Friday night, but the Hurricanes last ditch efforts bore fruit in the 78th minute with a converted try. All credit to the guys from Wellington on a slippery and cold night in Christchurch.

More than 12,000 tickets were sold to the game and it was fantastic to see the stands filled for the first time in 2024. Our members and our fans, we are in this together. It’s that unity, that dedication, that makes us stronger.

The Canes had the 7-0 lead at halftime before Cullen Grace drove over the line off the back of some gritty work from the forwards in the 53rd. Converted by Hohepa to even things up, earning another three in the 70th to take the lead 10-7.

It was a Justin Sangster try at the death that snuffed out the home victory, converted by once-upon-a-time Crusader Brett Cameron to make it 10-14.

A proud effort from the lads in red and black in front of their home crowd that came as close to a W as we’ve come this year so far. We now rally before travelling to Auckland to face the Blues on Saturday 23 March.
